Mixed Martial Arts: Video Highlights for Hampton Roads Fans

So our lead Mixed Martial Arts writer Curtis Clontz filled you in on some information regarding MMA, like how it's growing rapidly in Tidewater and where to find great gyms to participate. But what Tidewater Sports Report has failed to do is give you some MMA highlight video.

This video does not contain any local athletes (at least none I know of), but it shows you just how brutal and rough this extreme sport is.

Remember, nearly every major city has its own gym for Mixed Martial Arts. Read more about some of these gyms, including ones in Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, here.

Virginia Beach Baseball Native Drafted in 2008 by Chicago Cubs

Print & Web Copywriting

Pete Levitt, a graduate of Cape Henry Collegiate Academy in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was selected in the 50th round by the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.

Levitt went 2-0 as a freshman this spring at Pitt Community College in North Carolina.

Levitt was the #2 pitcher in high school behind Robert Morey, who hurled as a freshman this year with the University of Virginia Cavaliers. Morey was selected in last season's draft but chose to attend college.

Both players started for the Tidewater Drillers, an AAU baseball team based out of Virginia Beach. Read more about this story and other local athletes still playing at the college level here.

Fairlawn Community Center Fun for All

After school programs, adult leagues, and various other sports-related activities are all at Fairlawn Community Center in Norfolk, Virginia.

I spent some time there on Thursday and enjoyed watching young basketball prospects, some of which that will soon represent Tidewater high school teams like Booker T. Washington High School and Norview High School.

Close to the huge outdoor basketball courts, young adults were playing competitive kickball in the outfield of a pretty much abandoned baseball field. There were two games being played at the same time, while other teams waited their turn to play later in the evening.

After speaking with some of the players, I was informed this league was affiliated with the World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA). You can find all the information you want about forming your own team or league at kickball.com.

Although the opportunity to advance to a national tournament is at stake, the majority of the teams I watched seem quite relaxed--almost too much. Some of the outfielders had cold beverages in their hand, and other fielders were carrying on conversations with the crowd. Nonetheless, the atmosphere was perfect if you're looking to have a great time. Everyone got along, no arguments, and basically people just hanging out, enjoying time away from the office.

Fairlawn Community Center is at the crossing of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Kempsville Road.

Hit the outdoor batting cages at Smithfield Skate in Smithfield, VA

Sponsored by Coastal Technology

Calling all Hampton Roads baseball and softball players: Hop in your car and check out Smithfield Skate's outdoor batting cage located in Smithfield, Virginia. The cages offer excellent quality for softball and baseball cages, with several different speeds to choose from.

It's a very reasonable price, cheaper than most in fact. Try 10 cuts for $1. This includes the bat, helmet if you desire, and extremely accurate pitches.

I've already tested the grounds for you. It is the real deal. The most basic function of a pitching machine is to toss balls accurately so that the batter can learn to hit certain pitches; however, we all know many batting cages often fail to fulfill their duty to the diligent batter working to improve his or her swing.

I was very impressed with the accuracy of the pitches. Not once did I have a flawed pitch. They all came straight down the pipe, pitch after pitch.

I can't stand cages that pitch balls all over the place, much like a wild closer of some sort. You never where the next pitch is going to be, you're kicking yourself for wasting a few extra bucks, and if the machine is coming at a really fast speed, you are probably just trying to avoid getting beamed.

Professional Copywriting

Although it's located at a skating rink, this Smithfield batting cage is top-notch. Pick up a bat, choose a good speed, and rip pitches that you know are coming RIGHT DOWN THE PIPE. That's right, down the middle, like all pitching machines should do.

Smithfield Skate is located behind Advance Auto Parts and across from the Smithfield Plaza, where Farm Fresh and Burger King are good landmarks off the road.
